Purpose:
The purpose is to assist HEKS to develop two model watersheds in Borena Zone in different setting for “Integrated Watershed Management Based Livelihoods Improvement project. Garduba Watershed has been developed in Yabello Woreda, and Dikicha (an upgrade of earlier intervention) was has been established in Miyo Woreda. The initiatives are expected to be used as model watersheds to support the people of Borena to enhance their resilience to climate variability shocks and develop sustainable strategies for their livelihoods.
The project three sectors of interventions are:-
Concerted action towards improved and livelihood focused sustainable natural resource management (e.g. rangeland, water sources, forestry);
Strengthening of adaptive capacities in the face of a changing climate and support of community based disaster risk reduction; and
Coordination of Borena development initiatives and research and identified gaps to guarantee a more integrated and progressive development.
Key activities
WLRC assisted in the identification of the Watershed in consultation with communities,
Conduct biophysical and socio-economic baseline survey of the Garduba watershed
Prepare detail biophysical and socioeconomic development intervention plans
Provide capacity development training for watershed technicians, development organizations including local NGOs, agro-pastoral communities
WLRC is providing close monitoring and evaluation of the project.
Capture best practices that can be learned from the intervention under the agro-pastoral setting
