Project: Developing Resource Availability Assessment Methodology for Land and Water Related Interventions in the Wabi-Shebele and Genale Dawa (Juba) River Basins (RAAM)

Project Fund: Swiss Development Cooperation (SDC)

Project Implementing Organization: WLRC

Project Duration: October 2013 – March 2015

The project aims at proposing to SDC and partners a practical methodological framework including accompanying measures that allows for appropriately assessing the degree of ecological limitations of the rangeland and water resources utilisation in the context of drought resilience building in the pastoral and agro-pastoral communities in Wabi Shebelle and Genale-Dewa/Juba Basins. The objective of the project is to build drought resilience in the highland mixed farming system, pastoral and agro-pastoral communities of the two major river basins. This methodological framework allows to appropriately responding to questions: 1) What kind of potential risks for unsustainable utilization of rangeland and water resources need to be considered in developing resource management interventions? 2) What challenges are available in using water and range resources? 3) What kind of complementary measures are required in order to minimize identified risks?

The methodological framework will be used by non-scientific development practitioners. It shall assist them in assessing the relevance of particular resource related interventions in an ecological perspective.

Key activities:

The project activities include situation analysis, identification and development of broad and homogenous planning units of analysis, prepare Development Intervention Matrix (DIM), and finally developing the resource assessment Methodological Framework in consultation with the stakeholders
